Frequently Asked Questions
• Snorkelling seems easy, can I do it?
Answer: Yes, it is possible that you can snorkel as long as you are comfortable in the water. It is recommended that you take training in the basics such as clearing a snorkel and mask but not essential.
• If I decide I would like to have a go at Scuba Diving or Snorkelling how do I go about doing it?
Answer: Yo Yo Divers Limited can help you achieve this. Our friendly staff will go through which courses are available to you and what is involved. We can cater from the total beginner with no snorkelling experience at all and take you all the way through to becoming an Open Water Scuba Instructor!
• Where would I learn to Scuba Dive?
Answer: We use The Quays 5 metre purpose built variable depth diving Pool in Southampton on a Friday evening, where you will do your confined water training sessions. Then we take you to open water which could be either Vobster Quay Dive centre, or one of the beautiful beaches along the south coast. The dive sites depend on the weather and time of year you do your course.
• How old do I have to be to learn to Scuba Dive?
Answer: The minimum age is 10 years old. At this age you can do your Junior Open Water Diver Certification. This will allow you to dive to a depth of 12 metres/40 feet but you must dive with a certified parent, guardian or PADI Professional. 12 to 14 year olds must dive with a certified adult. At the age of 15 years old the certification upgrades to an Open Water Diver Certification where you will then be able to dive to 18 metres with a buddy. There are no upper age limits as long as you are fit and healthy.
• How much will it cost me to do my first Diving Course?
Answer: The PADI Open Water Course will cost you £349.00. The only extras are that we ask you to purchase your own mask, snorkel, fins and boots along with any entrance fees to dive sites. Discount will be given off the equipment you purchase. The price includes all other equipment, manuals, a dvd or video, dive tables registration, and certification.
• How long will it take me to complete my PADI Open Water Course?
Answer: It is run over two weekends. The first Friday evening you go to The Quays Swimming pool and carry out confined water dives 1 and 2. Next day (Saturday) you come to the shop where one of our highly experienced instructors will take you through the theory part of the course, followed by a multiple choice exam (don't panic, it is not as bad as many think!). The following Friday it's off to the pool for confined water dives 3,4, and 5. Then Saturday and Sunday you get to experience the excitement of your 4 open water dives. After completion of these dives you will be a qualified PADI Open Water Diver!!
• Do I have to be a good swimmer to do Scuba Diving?
Answer: You don't have to be a very strong swimmer, but do need to be reasonably proficient in the water as you are required to swim 200 metres non-stop with no swimming aids, or 300 metres with mask, fins and snorkel followed by 10 minutes of treading water or floating.
• What is in a scuba tank?
Answer: Recreational divers breathe air, not oxygen. The air in a scuba tank is like the air you are breathing now but has all the moisture & impurities removed.
• When I go swimming and dive to the bottom of the pool my ears sometimes hurt. Will they hurt when I go Scuba Diving?
Answer: As you descend through the water column the pressure increases, your ears hurt because of this extra pressure on your eardrum. During your training you will be shown ways to safely equalize the pressure on your ears, very similar to when you go flying.
• Am I likely to meet Jaws?
Answer: Most aquatic animals are very passive and wary of humans. A few do bite or sting but you are taught not to touch anything when you are diving. Divers & swimmers are not natural prey for sharks so shark attacks are very rare.
• Is scuba diving dangerous?
Answer: Like most sports there is an element of danger but as long as you follow the rules and regulations set out by PADI it will be as safe as possible.
